Business Model
Daldrup is a leading drilling services provider in attractive markets
Daldrup & Söhne AG is one of the leading specialised providers of drilling and environmental services in Germany and Central Europe. Founded in 1946 in Ascheberg, Daldrup & Söhne AG (ISIN DE0007830572) has grown into attractive growth markets. The IPO in 2007 made a significant contribution to this. The group is active in the business fields of renewable energies, drinking water and raw materials, among others. The company thus operates in markets that are highly relevant for future generations. The Daldrup Group is active in the DACH region as well as in the Benelux countries and is represented by its own subsidiaries in Switzerland and the Netherlands.
Daldrup has its own extensive drilling rig fleet and experienced drilling teams. The group is characterised in particular by its many years of know-how, its high standards in the planning and execution of drilling projects commissioned by customers, and its flexibility with short decision-making paths, which is typical of a medium-sized company.
The company's activities are divided into the business sectors Geothermal Energy, Raw Materials & Exploration, Water Extraction and Environment, Development & Services (EDS).
Expansion of geothermal energy indispensable for the heat transition
In the Geothermal Energy business unit, drilling services are provided on the one hand for near-surface geothermal energy (especially geothermal probes for heat pumps) for the housing industry, commerce and municipalities. On the other hand, the company provides its drilling expertise primarily for the development of medium-depth and deep geothermal energy with boreholes to depths of up to 6,000 metres. Customers include industrial companies up to listed corporations, public utilities and municipalities as well as private investors who want to use the locally available geothermal energy primarily to feed heating networks for heat supply or also as part of their demand for process heat or space heating for company buildings. Geothermal energy can also contribute to the supply of cooling.
Many studies show that solar thermal energy, biomass, waste heat and air- or water-coupled heat pumps will not be sufficient to meet the future decarbonised heat supply for space heating and hot water. The Group's business model is thus receiving positive support from subsidy programmes and regulatory frameworks as part of the heat transition, with the aim of decarbonising and decentralising heat generation.
Expertise in demand for special and exploratory drilling
In the Raw Materials and Exploration business sector, the wells drilled by Daldrup & Söhne AG are used for the exploration and development of deposits. With special deep drilling, Daldrup also supports government clients such as Nagra (National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste in Switzerland) and BGE (Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH) in the exploration of safe storage sites for eternal burdens.
Drilling for clean water and a clean environment
The Water Extraction business area includes well construction for the extraction of drinking, service, medicinal, mineral, boiler feed or cooling water as well as thermal brine. The customer base ranges from agriculture and public utilities to the beverage industry.
The business unit Environment, Development & Services (EDS) comprises special environmental engineering services such as the hydraulic remediation of contaminated sites, the construction of gas extraction wells for the recovery of landfill or mine gas (e.g. aftercare of old mines), the construction of groundwater quality measuring points or the installation of water purification plants.
The shares of Daldrup & Söhne AG are listed in the Scale (sub-segment of the Open Market of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange) and are included in the Scale30 selection index. Around 58.4% of the shares are held by the Daldrup family.
Questions about Daldrup
Other companies offer drilling services too. What’s so special about your technology?
The special thing about Daldrup is the blend of skills from special foundation engineering with those from deep drilling technology which enables the company to offer drilling services with a unique level of precision and react in the ideal manner to difficult geological conditions. Daldrup is unique in Germany in this area.
Who are the company’s most important customers?
Projects to harness geothermal energy are typically ordered by local community customers (e.g. public works departments). Projects in the EDS and Water Procurement areas tend to come more from industrial customers.
Which growth drivers does Daldrup see in its relevant markets?
More and more significance is being placed on regenerative energy sources, because supplies of fossil fuels, such as crude oil and natural gas, will eventually dry up. Geothermics, which involves harnessing the natural heat that occurs in certain layers of the earth’s crust, is regarded as one of the most dynamic sub-markets. The European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC) estimates an annual average growth rate of eleven percent for geothermal heat generation alone up to 2020. While near-surface drilling is sufficient for supplying private households with heating and hot water, for example, deep drilling down to depths of 5,000 metres where temperatures reach 200°C is required for heat and electricity generating on a larger scale.
Apart from Geothermics, Daldrup is also active in other strong growth markets. High energy costs and dependency on raw material imports, for example, have had the result that more and more new exploration projects and field development drilling for oil and gas are being undertaken in Germany and Europe. The high prices for minerals and metals are also creating an attractive market for other exploratory drilling projects. There is also a lot of growth in the market for acquiring mine gas from disused mines which is sponsored by the EEC. The exploration and securing of disused mines in the Ruhr and Saarland regions of Germany constitutes another sustainable source of potential sales.
Another global trend is water. In order to meet the drinking water requirements of the 8.5 billion people who it is estimated will be living on our planet by 2025, roughly 8 million new groundwater wells will have to be dug. Today, more than 40 percent of the population of Africa – 300 million people – do not have access to clean water. In its millennium development goals, the UN is planning tangible improvements in this area with the result that investments in water technology are set to increase all over the world for this reason alone. But there is a water shortage in Europe too, where the groundwater level is already dropping in 60 percent of all cities, thus necessitating deeper wells.
Which reference projects can Daldrup document in the deep drilling field, in particular geothermic deep drilling?
Two holes, each with a depth of 2,500 metres, were drilled in Bleiswijk in the Netherlands in July 2007 for a geothermal doublet to harness the earth’s heat. We are currently drilling a hole with a depth of 3,000 metres in Arnsberg so that a deep geothermal probe can be installed to heat the outdoor swimming pool which goes by the name “Nass”. Other deep drilling projects are in progress to extract thermal brine, and we are also involved in exploratory drilling (e.g. Bad Windsheim, Exploration Beustfeld etc.)
